Oyster Shore is a proposed 275MW (1,100MWh) BESS facility to be located in Glenwood Landing, NY. The Facility is being developed by Jupiter Power, which is owned by the private equity arm of BlackRock, one of the largest asset/investment managers in the world.
Oyster Shore, if operational today, would be among the largest BESS facilities in the world, and while sited on industrial property, it is surrounded by residential property.
BESS facilities have been notorious for lithium-ion thermal runaway fires that have lasted days, which is why they are typically zoned in industrial areas. The energy industry itself has acknowledged that this is their number one weakness. There has been one large scale BESS fire per month since 2021 proving that these facilities only belong where they have zero chance of impacting residents.
The fire at Moss Landing has produced elevated levels of heavy metals more than 8 miles from the site of the fire. In addition, residents more than 8 miles away have complained of health issues from breathing or coming in contact with Hydrogen Fluoride, which converts to hydrofluoric acid when mixed with water.
The map below shows an 8 mile radius around the proposed Oyster Shore facility. The impact of a fire like the recent event at Moss Landing could impact hundreds of thousands of Long Island residents and overwhelm health care facilities.
There is no question that BESS facilities should NOT be located near residential areas, if they should be sited at all.
